Burridge skipper Rick Ankers was at the heart of everything in a four wicket win over Rowledge in the Southern Electric Premier Cricket League Two at The Ridge on Saturday.

The Burridge skipper lost the toss for the sixth consecutive time and the home side found themselves in the field on a cloudy and overcast afternoon.

Rowledge got off to a flyer scoring 105 in the first 20 overs with no wickets down. Burridge finally struck in the 24th over, and that heralded a collapse by the visitors.

Six wickets fell for just 50 more runs – with skipper Ankers taking five for just 20 runs. Nick McMurray also chipped in after conceding 12 runs in one over and then just 10 runs in the next nine overs.

Rowledge finished on 211-9 – about 50 runs short of where they looked like getting.

In reply Burridge set off at a more sedate pace and worryingly lost their first three wickets for just 44 runs.

Byron Van der Merwe played a pivotal role in steadying the ship by constructing a patient 54 runs before he was bowled around his legs.

Young James Sennett then showed his emerging talent by helping his skipper out by putting on 62 runs for the fourth wicket.

Ankers eventually saw Burridge home with an over to spare with a swashbuckling innings of 54 not out at the rate of a run-a-ball – his highest score of what has been a poor season by his high standards.

This coupled with his five wickets justifiably earnt him the man of the match award.
