Burridge’s mini-revival came to a crashing end when they travelled to Ventnor’s magnificent new Newclose Ground but were not inspired by their surroundings.
On a drizzly day Burridge lost the toss for the fifth consecutive game and found themselves in the field at the start on a heavy and cloudy day.
Burridge got off to the best possible start, grabbing the first three wickets with only 34 runs on the board. The dangerous New Zealander, who is second only to our Derek Kenway in the averages, was on his way for just three runs, when Nick McMurray clean bowled him.
The ever improving Greg Thew took care of both openers, and finished with figures of 4-47.
Ventnor captain Ian Hilsum (81) did his best to steady the ship with the help of Neil Westhorpe (52) putting on a 4th wicket partnership of 104.
Burridge then managed to nibble away at the wickets finally accounting for eight of the home batsmen, but not before Ventnor had accrued 260 runs – helped by Matt Holmes smashing 21 runs off just 14 balls.
In reply Burridge lost emergency opener Cameron White for just a single, but then witnessed a flourishing partnership between Nick Ball and Byron Van Der Merwe (32) of 66 runs.
Ball reached his 50 in just 51 balls, and was eventually out for 54 off 57 balls – a delightful innings.
Ventnor were worried at this stage and posted five boundary riders to try and cut off his shots.
Young James Sennett aged just 16, then came to the wicket and showed a great deal of maturity in his stay, scoring 30 valuable runs.
Sadly the rest of the innings then collapsed, giving Burridge a meagre total of just 143 runs.
